Silver Electroplating: cost efficient and effective

Silver Electroplating from Summit offers cost-efficient aesthetic and functional enhancements for industrial applications that include electronic parts and round silver electroplated wire.

Our Silver Plated surfaces can be formulated to deliver a wide range of finishes, tensile properties, durability levels, and performance advantages. Because Silver can tarnish over time, we also offer anti-tarnish coating for programs where appearance is an important role of a part’s function.

Silver Electroplating Industrial parts provides advantages that include:

Electrical Conductivity: Greatly enhanced Electrical Conductivity makes silver the ideal choice when dependable but efficient  conductivity is required. Aerospace and electronics professionals often choose silver plating of key components for this very reason.

Thermal Conductivity: Excellent Thermal Conductivity make Silver Plating a preferred surface choice when exposure to high and fluctuating temperatures is expected. Automobile manufacturers often use silver for the durability enhancement it offers.

Corrosion-resistance: Silver Electroplating at Summit adds a durable, wear-resistant coating to many metal substrates. Even when applied as a thin layer, Silver offers cost-efficient corrosion resistant on “common material” parts.

Antibacterial: Because silver is a Noble metal, Silver Plating thwarts the growth of bacteria and potentially harmful organisms. Silver Electroplate is therefore an excellent option for coating medical tools and devices that come in contact with the human body.

Light weight: Despite its durability, Silver Plating adds very little weight.

Adhesion improvement:  Silver Plating improves solder-ability,  providing a stronger hold for multi-component attachment.

Silver plating to meet strict industrial specifications.

Summit Silver Electroplating meets Certification Requirements mandated by highly technical and monitored industries. These Requirements  dictate standards for plating finish, thickness, texture and functional performance. Silver Specifications Summit conforms to include:

MIL-QQ-S-365
MIL-QQ-S-365 was the “federal standard” before ASTM B700 was established. Because MIL-QQ-S-36 mandates a minimum plating thickness of 0.0005 inches is still used in many engineering applications where silver plating is needed to improve physical function characteristics.

ASTM B700
ASTM replaced Federal Silver Standard MIL-QQ-S-365. ASTM B700 is mandated for many engineering applications, setting minimum standards for silver plating material purity. ASTM is divided into 3 “silver purity” categories:

  • ASTM B700 | Type I: Silver content of at least 99.9%
  • ASTM B700 | Type II: Silver content of at least 99.0%
  • ASTM B700 | Type III: Silver content of at least 98.0%

ASTM B 298
ASTM B 298 is a specification that Summit achieves for silver electroplating on copper wire used in electrical applications. ASTM B 298 sets standards tensile strength, electrical resistivity, plating weight, and plating thickness.

Silver Plating to meet diverse industry needs.

All combined, the cost and performance enhancements of Silver Electroplating Industrial parts make it a preferred surface choice for circuit connectors, fiber optic cables, medical devices, and performance critical parts used in  Aerospace, Automotive, Telecommunications, and Consumer Goods.

Open for quick answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions about Silver Electroplating
Q: Why is silver plating used in industry?

Silver provides the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals, making it ideal for power transmission, RF/microwave components, and connectors.

Q: Does silver plating tarnish?

Yes, silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air, forming tarnish. However, tarnish rarely affects conductivity in high-current applications.

Q: How thick is silver plating typically applied?

Industrial coatings range from 40 to 300 microinches, depending on the intended function and wear requirements.

Q: What are the main advantages of silver over gold plating?

Silver is more cost-effective and offers better conductivity, though it tarnishes faster and is less chemically stable than gold.

Q: Can silver plating handle high temperatures?

Yes. Silver withstands high current loads and thermal cycling, making it valuable in aerospace and energy applications.

Q: Is silver plating good for soldering?

Yes, silver is easily solderable and widely used in circuit boards and electronic assemblies.

Q: What industries rely on silver plating?

Aerospace, automotive, electronics, and energy sectors all rely heavily on silver coatings for conductivity and heat resistance.

Q: How does silver plating prevent electrical loss?

Silver reduces contact resistance, ensuring efficient current transfer in high-power and RF components.

Q: Does silver plating provide corrosion resistance?

Not as much as gold or palladium. While silver protects against some corrosion, its tarnish requires maintenance in certain applications.

Q: Is silver plating cost-effective long-term?

Yes, especially in power and energy applications where conductivity is critical. Silver is significantly cheaper than gold while still offering high performance.
